A Note on Houseboat Based Trip Occupancy
Travel by houseboat provides the optimum viewing platform when visiting Glen Canyon. A fully stocked kitchen, on-board bathrooms, and private bedrooms offer guests the comforts of home while the pleasures of the wilderness beckon just outside. Spend a day hiking and exploring the beauty of Lake Powell and its many canyons, then return to the convenience of freshly prepared meals and a warm shower or a swim in the crystal clear waters just off deck. Relaxation and adventure go hand in hand.
The houseboats operated on Glen Canyon Field School trips follow a layout allowing for best accommodation of participants. Each houseboat holds a maximum of six passengers. The two upper cabins will comfortably house two occupants while the two lower berths cater to single registrants. Boats are best filled with three different combinations of participants including: a total of four single occupants, a total of three groups of shared occupants, or two single and two shared occupants. To meet the needs of passengers, registration is limited to these three possible configurations for a trip to sail. A second boat may be added in the event of trip overflow and waiting lists are offered for each trip.
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is a paradise for many visitors each year. While enjoying the sights and sensations of this wonderful landscape, it may be easy to forget YOU ARE IN A DESERT! Arid environments present a number of exposure related hazards easily avoided by careful trip planning.
Hydration is essential to desert recreation and exploration. Drinking one gallon of water per day will help prevent illness during activity.
Cover up. Sunglasses, sunscreen, hats and light weight long sleeves are all beneficial for preventing damage from sun exposure.
Watch the weather before and during a trip. Deserts can reach extreme highs and lows in temperature, so it's important to bring the right clothes and dress in layers. Storms can be quick and ferocious. Pack the right gear and be observant of changing conditions.
Above all, respect your limits. Do not push yourself and alert others if you are injured or unwell.
The art of Maynard Dixon is a powerful and evocative exploration of the American Southwest. Drawing inspiration from Zion and Southern Utah, his vibrant works speak to the colorful landscape of the Colorado Plateau.
Pack a lunch and travel with us for a tour of the Maynard Dixon summer home just north of Mt. Carmel Junction. Participants meet at 8:30am on Saturday, October 20th at the Page Public Library. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and bring water and a camera! Be sure to register as space is limited.
Our 2018 trips are booked and ready to sail! Missed out? Stay tuned for our 2019 excursions.
If you're registering two participants and you plan on sharing a berth, use promo code RIDE2 at checkout for a discount on your trip!
